A 34-year-old tourist from Rajasthan lost his life, while three others were injured after their Scorpio SUV crashed near the north portal of the Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district late Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Kailash, a resident of Sikar district, Rajasthan. The injured have been identified as Aditya from Lakhimpur in Uttar Pradesh, Rajendra from Sikar, Rajasthan, and Siddharth, the driver of the vehicle.

How the Accident Happened

According to police, the group was travelling from Manali to Lahaul when the accident occurred at around 10 pm shortly after the SUV exited the north portal of the Atal Tunnel.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Scorpio was allegedly being driven at high speed. The driver reportedly failed to negotiate a sharp curve, causing the vehicle to veer off the road toward the Chandra River before crashing into an under-construction bridge. The impact was so severe that exposed iron rods from the bridge structure pierced the SUV, leaving it badly mangled.

Rescue Operation

Police, firefighters, and local rescue teams rushed to the scene after receiving information about the crash. Rescuers worked for several hours to extricate the occupants from the severely damaged vehicle.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Kailash’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and his family has been informed. Authorities said the body will be handed over to relatives after legal formalities are completed.

Police Investigation Underway

Sissu Station House Officer Mukesh Rathour said the accident is under investigation. While overspeeding is believed to be the primary cause, police are examining all aspects of the incident.

Officials have once again urged tourists to avoid overspeeding and unnecessary night travel on mountain roads, especially during the monsoon season when roads are slippery and visibility is reduced.

Rising Concern Over Road Safety

The Atal Tunnel route has witnessed increasing tourist traffic in recent years. Authorities continue to advise motorists to follow speed limits, drive cautiously through sharp bends, and remain alert while travelling through hilly terrain to prevent similar tragedies.
