India Hold Early Advantage as Smriti Mandhana’s Classy 83 Puts England Under Pressure at Lord’s
The historic one-off Women’s Test between India and England at Lord’s began with an entertaining opening day that showcased quality batting, disciplined bowling, and moments of brilliance from both sides. India finished Day 1 in a commanding position after posting 285 in their first innings before reducing England to 21 for 1 at stumps, leaving the hosts trailing by 264 runs.
Playing the first-ever Women’s Test at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, both teams were eager to make history. England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping the morning conditions would assist her pace attack. However, India’s batters quickly seized control of the contest.
Smriti Mandhana Anchors India’s Strong Start
India suffered an early setback when Shafali Verma was dismissed cheaply, but Smriti Mandhana immediately settled into her rhythm. The stylish left-hander played with confidence from the outset, timing the ball beautifully through the covers while punishing anything short or overpitched.
Mandhana mixed elegant drives with controlled aggression and looked comfortable against both pace and spin. She raced to a run-a-ball half-century and ensured India maintained a healthy scoring rate throughout the opening session.
Although she narrowly missed a deserved century, Mandhana’s superb 83 from 108 deliveries laid the perfect foundation for India’s innings. Her dismissal to Issy Wong denied her a place on the famous Lord’s Honours Board, but it did little to overshadow one of the finest innings of the day.
Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma Keep India in Control
Following Mandhana’s departure, captain Harmanpreet Kaur continued India’s momentum with a patient yet effective innings. She rotated the strike well and punished loose deliveries, building an important partnership in the middle order.
Harmanpreet reached her half-century before England spinner Mady Villiers produced a sharp turning delivery to dismiss the Indian skipper just before the tea interval.
With the responsibility shifting to the lower middle order, Deepti Sharma stepped up with another composed performance. After starting cautiously, she accelerated confidently and played several well-executed sweep shots against England’s spinners.
Her valuable 57 helped India move closer to the 300-run mark. However, England staged a late comeback with the ball as India’s lower order collapsed quickly. The visitors slipped from 274 for 6 to 285 all out, leaving several runs behind that had appeared within reach earlier in the innings.
England Fight Back with Improved Bowling
England’s bowlers struggled during the opening session as inconsistent line and length allowed India’s top order to score freely. Lauren Bell and the seam attack offered too many scoring opportunities, while Sophie Ecclestone could not immediately settle into an effective rhythm.
The hosts improved significantly after lunch.
Issy Wong bowled with greater discipline, while wicketkeeper Amy Jones moved closer to the stumps to restrict India’s footwork. The tactical adjustment slowed the scoring rate and eventually produced Mandhana’s crucial wicket.
Off-spinner Mady Villiers also played an important role by extracting turn and claiming valuable breakthroughs. England’s fightback ensured India failed to cross the 300-run mark despite their strong position.
Indian Seamers Strike Early
India’s fast bowlers carried their confidence into the final session with an impressive display using the new ball.
Sayali Satghare generated excellent swing and consistently troubled England’s openers. Kranti Gaud provided the breakthrough by trapping Tammy Beaumont leg before wicket with a delivery that moved back sharply.
England struggled to score freely during the opening overs and managed only 21 runs for the loss of one wicket in 11 overs.
Maia Bouchier remained unbeaten on 17, while Heather Knight survived until stumps alongside her. Although England avoided further damage before the close of play, they still face a challenging task on Day 2.
India Take Momentum into Day Two
India will begin the second day with confidence after dominating large portions of the opening day’s play. Smriti Mandhana’s elegant innings provided the platform, while Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma ensured the visitors posted a competitive first-innings total.
England deserve credit for their afternoon comeback with the ball, but their batting lineup now faces the difficult challenge of erasing a sizeable deficit against an Indian bowling attack that has already shown discipline and movement.
With plenty of cricket still remaining, Day 2 promises another fascinating contest at Lord’s as England attempt to recover and India look to tighten their grip on the historic Test match.
